Digital Channels Feature Rollout / Retail Banking Project Manager Simulation — PNC Financial Services Group

Lead the $1.5M refresh of PNC's Cash Flow Insights feature across the mobile and online banking apps — a new cash-flow forecast model, a redesigned budgeting UI, Virtual Wallet integration, and CFPB-governed money-guidance disclosures, on a fixed 14-week clock. Everyone calls it a simple UI refresh. The forecast model has never once been tested on real customer transactions, and the board has already been promised the adoption numbers. Gain hands-on project management experience over 27 days of real decisions, stakeholders, and PMO deliverables — no prior experience required.

The scenario

PNC Financial Services Group runs Cash Flow Insights, a customer-facing budgeting and forecasting feature inside the PNC mobile and online banking apps. It sits alongside Virtual Wallet, PNC's flagship spend-and-save product, and it is showing its age: the visualizations are dated, the forecast logic is a simple recurring-transaction heuristic built years ago, and engagement has plateaued. Digital Customer Experience has funded a $1.5M, 14-week refresh — a redesigned UI, a new cash-flow forecast model, deeper Virtual Wallet account-hierarchy integration, in-app onboarding, and updated customer communications. The refresh is the visible centerpiece of the Retail Digital Banking Experience Program this year. The executive sponsor has framed it to the board as proof that PNC can ship modern, helpful money tools as well as any fintech, and retail marketing has already committed to an adoption campaign timed to the launch. On paper this is a contained feature project: the app exists, the feature exists, the team is in-house, and the scope is 'make it better.' Underneath that, three things have never actually been tested. The new forecast model has only run against synthetic data, not real customer transaction history. The Virtual Wallet integration assumes account structures that not every customer actually has. And a feature that tells customers what their balance will be is consumer financial guidance, which the CFPB has opinions about. Your job is to find out how deep the project really goes before the launch date finds out for you.

What you'll do as the project manager

  • Ship the Cash Flow Insights refresh to iOS, Android, and online banking within the 14-week (Day 27 go-live) window
  • Deliver a forecast model validated against real customer transaction history, not synthetic data, before launch
  • Integrate Virtual Wallet account-hierarchy data with documented handling for non-standard account structures
  • Clear CFPB consumer-financial-guidance disclosure requirements with Consumer Regulatory Compliance sign-off before go-live
  • Reach the launch with an adoption-readiness plan (in-app onboarding, comms, support training) that gives the feature a real chance at the promised engagement lift

The challenges you'll navigate

  • The new forecast model has never been validated against real customer transaction history — accuracy is unknown
  • Virtual Wallet integration assumes account structures that not all customers have, creating untested edge cases
  • CFPB consumer-financial-guidance disclosure scope for a forecasting feature is not yet defined
  • Adoption targets were committed to the board before the project assessed whether the timeline supports them
  • Cash Flow Insights ships inside the shared mobile release train, so its schedule is not fully under project control
