You badge into Amazon's Nashville corporate office at 8:15am — Building 3, second floor, the Fulfillment Technology wing. The open floor plan is already buzzing. Your desk is in a cluster of four near the window, next to a whiteboard covered in architecture diagrams labeled 'WMS v4.0 — BNA5 Deployment.' Someone has drawn a red circle around 'Nov 1' with three exclamation marks.

Your laptop is already provisioned. There's a sticky note on the keyboard from Marcus Whitfield, your predecessor: 'SharePoint folder has everything I documented. James Okonkwo is your lifeline. Good luck — you'll need it.' You open Chime and see 14 unread messages, most from the past week. Three are from Priya Mehta's EA confirming a 10am meeting today. One is from Tom Nakamura: 'Stop by my desk before your meeting with Priya. Important.'

You walk over to Tom's desk at 8:45. He's reviewing a portfolio dashboard on his monitor — eight projects, each with RAG status indicators. He sees you approaching and swivels his chair. 'Welcome aboard. I wanted to catch you before Priya does.' He lowers his voice. 'She's going to push for speed. She always does, and on this one, she has reason to. But I've watched three accelerated projects in this org crash because PMs skipped governance to keep the sponsor happy. Don't be the fourth. Get your charter right. Get your RAID log started this week. I know the timeline is aggressive — I'll flex where I can on documentation formats — but I will not flex on having a charter approved before planning starts.'

At 9:50, you head to Conference Room Opry-3 for the meeting with Priya. She's already there, standing at the whiteboard, sketching a timeline. No small talk. 'Sit down. Let me tell you what I need.' She turns to face you. 'BNA5 is the pilot for a 15-site rollout. If we nail this, I get budget for the entire network. If we miss November 1, we lose a year — Q4 freeze locks us out until January, and by then the SVP will have moved on to the next priority. I need a weekly dashboard on my desk every Friday by 4pm. Throughput projections, milestone RAG, blocker list with resolution timelines. Not a status report — a dashboard. Numbers, not narratives. Can you do that?'
