Scene Setup
Your first day at Apple's Network Operations starts with a 7:00 AM Pacific video call from Karen Marchetti. She's in her Austin office, the NOC monitoring wall visible behind her — rows of screens showing service health dashboards in green, amber, and red. The room hums with the quiet intensity of an operations floor.
'Welcome to Network Operations,' Karen says. 'I'm going to set context in a way that the business case document doesn't. Every second of every day, 2 billion Apple devices depend on the services we monitor. When iCloud goes down, 2.2 billion accounts can't access their photos, their documents, their backups. When the App Store has issues, $1.1 trillion in commerce slows down. When iMessage fails, a hundred million conversations stop mid-sentence.
The Austin NOC has not missed a Sev-1 alert in 18 months. That's not a talking point — it's a standard. The Singapore NOC will meet that standard from Day 1 of live operations. Not from Day 30, not after a 'ramp-up period.' Day 1.
Here's your challenge: you're building a NOC in 12 weeks that Austin took 6 years to perfect. The facility is under construction. The team is unhired. The security accreditation hasn't been submitted. And the Q4 product launch — the highest-traffic period of the year — is your deadline.'
She pauses and looks directly at the camera.
'I need you to fly to Singapore this week. Walk the facility with David Tan. Assess the construction progress personally. Then come back and tell me whether the 12-week timeline is achievable — honestly, not optimistically. I'd rather know the truth on Day 1 than discover it on Day 60.'
