You land in Austin at 7:15 AM on a Monday morning. The Uber from the airport takes you east on Highway 130 past miles of Texas scrubland until a massive structure appears on the horizon — Tesla Gigafactory Texas. The building doesn't look real at first. Ten million square feet of factory under one roof. From the road, the scale is incomprehensible — you can see the main building, the casting facility, the battery factory, and the general assembly hall, all connected by enclosed bridges and conveyor corridors. There are semi-trucks lined up at dozens of loading docks, and you can hear the low industrial hum from the parking lot.
Ajay Khatri meets you at the Building 1 entrance, badge in hand. He's mid-forties, wearing a Tesla polo and carrying a Surface Pro like it's a clipboard. His handshake is firm and his smile is genuine but measured — he's been through enough PM transitions to calibrate expectations carefully. "Welcome to Giga Texas. Let me show you around before we talk business." He walks you through the factory. You pass through a corridor overlooking Line 1 — Model Y production. Robots the size of school buses are spot-welding body panels at a rate that makes your heart race. The noise is controlled but omnipresent. Operators in Tesla-branded safety gear monitor stations with a mix of HMI touchscreens and — you notice — paper clipboards and whiteboards.
Ajay leads you up a steel staircase to a mezzanine overlooking Line 3 — Cybertruck. The line is newer, less mature, and visibly more chaotic than Line 1. You can see the iconic stainless-steel bodies moving through stations, some with obvious quality holds flagged by orange tags. "This is where you'll live for the next six months," Ajay says. "Line 3 is the pilot. If MES works here, we roll it to Lines 1 and 2. If it doesn't — well, let's not think about that." He takes you to the Manufacturing IT office on the mezzanine — a glass-walled room with eight workstations, a wall-mounted monitor showing SCADA dashboards, and a whiteboard covered in half-erased integration diagrams from the previous PM.
Ajay closes the door and sits across from you. The briefing begins. "Here's what you need to understand. We have three vendors on this project. Siemens is building the MES platform — Opcenter. Rockwell is handling the OT integration — connecting PLCs and SCADA to the MES layer. Accenture is supposed to be the systems integrator — tying MES to SAP and handling the overall architecture. The problem is, their contracts were negotiated independently. Procurement did them in parallel to save time. Each vendor's SOW references interfaces to the other two vendors — but nobody actually defined those interfaces in detail." He pauses. "The vendors all think their piece works. The problem is nobody owns the spaces between the pieces."
