Day 1 — A Good First Day

You arrive at State Farm's corporate campus in Bloomington, Illinois — the 'Three Twins' building complex that has anchored the town's skyline for decades. It's 8:15 AM, early March. The campus is sprawling and orderly: manicured lawns, a lake, and buildings connected by enclosed walkways so employees can move between them without facing the Illinois winter.

Margie Southard meets you in the lobby of Building A. She's dressed sharply, carries a leather portfolio, and greets you with a firm handshake. "Welcome to State Farm. Let me show you the project room."

The project room is on the third floor — a dedicated space with a long conference table, two whiteboards (one already populated with a high-level timeline), and a row of monitors showing project dashboards. The previous PM's handover binder sits on the table, tabbed and organized. Status reports are filed. The RAID log is printed and annotated. There's a stakeholder contact sheet laminated and pinned to the wall.

Your first impression: this project is in decent shape. The previous PM left cleanly, the governance structure is in place, and the team seems professional. Margie walks you through the room, pointing out the filing system, the video conferencing setup for remote team members, and the weekly reporting cadence.

"Take your first week to get oriented," she says, settling into a chair across from you. "Meet the stakeholders, review the vendor materials, and get comfortable with the scope. I trust you to tell me what you find. I don't need updates every hour — but I do need your honest assessment by Friday."
